MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Highlighted by two hosted tournaments and 10 total home matches, the Georgia College & State University soccer team and head coach Juan Pablo Favero announced its 2009 schedule today (June 4).
The 2009 schedule plays well off the 2008 season, a banner year for Bobcat soccer. Georgia College made its first trip to the NCAA Tournament, as well as their first appearance in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) National Top-25.
Each one of the Bobcat matches count for in-region play, helping them bolster their all-important region ranking as they look to make it two-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. The 2009 slate features a whopping seven teams that played in the 2008 NCAA Tournament, and four from the NSCAA's Final National Rankings.
Elite Eight participant and No. 5 Columbus State University, as well as No. 13 Carson-Newman College, No. 22 UNC Pembroke and No. 25 University of Tampa all appear on GCSU's schedule in 2009, in addition to six other teams that earned NSCAA Regional rankings.
After an exhibition against Mercer University at home Sunday, Aug. 16 at 6 p.m., the season begins in Savannah, Ga. Armstrong Atlantic State University will host its Pirate Invitational, and GCSU will take on Queens (N.C.) College Friday, Aug. 28 at 3 p.m. and then Florida Southern College Sun. Aug. 30 at 1 p.m.
The home portion of the 2009 schedule begins with the First Bobcat Shootout tournament, Sept. 4 and 6. The Bobcats will open up with the team that knocked them out of the NCAA Tournament - Catawba College - at 8 p.m. The Panthers of Florida Tech provide the second opponent for GCSU at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 6.
Next is the six-team Little Feet Invitational Friday, Sept. 11 and Sunday, Sept. 13. The Bobcats take on Lincoln Memorial University Friday at 8:30 p.m. and then battle Carson-Newman Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
After a Sept. 18 match at the University of West Georgia, the Bobcats return home Sunday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. to face Barry University. The Peach Belt Conference (PBC) season opens Wednesday, Sept. 23 at Georgia Southwestern State University. The Bobcats head back to Savannah, Ga. for a neutral-site showdown with 2007 National Champion Tampa Sunday, Sept. 27, before hosting their first PBC match with North Georgia Saturday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m.
Three-straight PBC road trips to Armstrong Atlantic, Clayton State University and conference-newbie Flagler College in early October round out the road schedule for GCSU soccer. The final four matches take place at Bobcat Field, rounding out a busy month with eight contests, all in PBC play. UNCP comes to town Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 5 p.m., followed by the defending PBC Champions Columbus State at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24.
After a battle with USC Aiken Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m., the Bobcats welcome the University of Montevallo to the league with a Halloween Night Senior Night Saturday, Oct. 31 at 4 p.m.
PBC Tournament play will then run Nov. 3, 6 and 8, as the Bobcats look to improve upon their semifinal finish from a year ago. The NCAA Tournament begins Nov. 13.
Georgia College has six teams on the 2009 schedule it has never played before.
