Dr. Joe Samprone has been the head coach of the Bobcats since 2000 after serving as an assistant coach in 1998 and 1999. Samprone, originally from Boston, taught Economics at Georgia College from 1983-2003.
The Bobcat women's cross country team had the best season in school history in 2009, blistering the course for a runner-up finish at the PBC Championships. They carried that momentum to the NCAA Southeast Regional, narrowly missing an NCAA Finals qualifying spot by taking fourth overall.
The Bobcat men's cross country team had a strong season in 2007, evidenced by Samprone picking up his first Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year honor. The Bobcats took third at the conference meet, and then added an 11th place finish at the South Region Championships. The men had their highest-ever conference finish at second in 2006.
Samprone earned his BA in Chemistry from the University of
Massachusetts-Boston in 1971, and MA (1973) and Ph.D. in Economics
from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has also
taught at the University of Michigan-Dearborn from 1975-78 and
Purdue University from 1979-83.
Joe and his wife, Patti, currently live in Eatonton.
