MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Georgia College cross country will head to Montevallo, Ala. to compete in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Championship Saturday, Oct. 20 on the campus of the University of Montevallo.
The men’s team will send seven runners to Montevallo. Juniors Philip Laskey (Marietta, Ga.) and Tucker Forbes (Lilburn, Ga.) will give the very young team a veteran presence, leading the five freshmen on the team. Laskey has led the team all year, and Forbes is coming off his best finish of the year. Paul McNeil (Dunwoody, Ga.) has had an impressive freshman season, finishing with either the second or third fastest times in every race this year.
The men will run an 8K race on Saturday; this will be just the third race of that length for the team this year, and second for some of the freshmen.
The women’s team will send a more experienced but still relatively young team to Montevallo. Junior Allison Lones (Kathleen, Ga.) and freshman Taylor Roeck (Cumming, Ga.) have led the team during the 2012 season. Six other runners will join Lones and Roeck for the 6K race.
Sophomore Whitney Sweet (Roswell, Ga.) and freshman Meghan Wetterhall (Atlanta) have been key members of the Bobcats during the 2012 season; Sweet having three top-30 finishes overall and has a scoring finish in all four races and Wetterhall with two top-25 finishes and three scoring finishes.
The men’s team finished fifth in the 2011 PBC Championship, while the women finished seventh. Both teams have finished as high as second, with the men doing so in 2006 and the women finishing second in the 2009 PBC Championship. The races will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 with the men going first; the women’s race is set to start at 9:45 a.m.
