SAN ANTIONIO - The Georgia College & State University women's cross country squad took runner-up honors to host University of Texas-San Antonio at the Ricardo Romo UTSA Six Flags Fiesta Texas Classic. Senior Heather Raines (Lawrenceville, Ga.) led the Bobcat quintet with a top-10 finish as all five runners finished in the top-20.
Raines buzzed through the 5k course in 20:13 to take ninth overall. Joining her in the top-10 just one slot later was classmate Virginia Balkcom (Fayetteville, Ga.) at 20:39.
Junior Dani Destiche (Snellville, Ga.) was 12th overall in 20:47, with sophomore Sarah Balkcom (Fayetteville, Ga.) crossing the line 13th in 20:51, just one second more than her career-best. Classmate Karissa Ekstrom (Alpharetta, Ga.) was 15th in 21:17.
The squad was just 39 points behind the Division I Roadrunners, who took the team title at their home race. UTSA's Dana Mecke earned the individual championship, breaking the tape at 18:23.
The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Sept. 26 at Mercer RunFit Sports Invitational in Macon, Ga.
