WINGATE, N.C. - Led by freshmen on both sides, the Georgia College & State University cross country teams competed at the Pre-Region Meet at Wingate University today (Sept. 13) the women taking third and the men eighth.
Freshman Karissa Ekstrom (Alpharetta, Ga.) paced the Bobcats for the second-straight meet, finishing the 6K course in 26:02, good for 13th place. Supporting Ekstrom was junior Heather Raines (Loganville, Ga.) in 22nd (26:27) and classmate Bonnie Ueltzen (Blairsville, Ga.) in 27th (26:40).
Senior Sarah Hakala (Jacksonville, Fla.) was 36th at 27:13, and freshman Sarah Balkcom(Fayetteville, Ga.) came in one spot later at 27:16.
On the men's side, freshman Rob Manning (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was the top finisher for the Bobcats, buzzing through the 10K course in 36:19. He unseated Colin Conroy (Dacula, Ga.) from his spot as top Bobcat (a place he held for the first two races this season). Conroy finished one spot behind Manning in 27th (26:24). Supporting that pair was rookie Daniel Horseman (Cohotta, Ga.) in 32nd (37:00), sophomore Tim Cary(Monroe, Ga.) in 45th (37:50) and freshman Travis Knight (Oxford, Ga.)in 58th (39:24).
The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Sept. 20 at the University of Alabama-Huntsville for the Fleet Feet Sports/Earl Jacoby Memorial.
