Bobcat Women’s Tennis Starts Conference Season with 7-2 Win over Augusta

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College Women's Tennis team (2-0, 1-0 PBC) started Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play on the right foot Tuesday, taking out Augusta University (4-2, 0-1 PBC) 7-2 at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility.

Doubles play produced a 2-1 result for the Bobcats, with wins in the first and third lines. The nation's No. 16 doubles pairing in Jena Kelly (Lawrenceville) and Valeria Lopez (Galicia, Spain) looked every bit the part in an 8-0 shutout of Eva Miralles-Miro and Maria Alice Vieira in the top slot.

In third doubles, Paula Garriga (Barcelona, Spain) and Emilia Richter (Berlin, Germany) finished off Amelia Pinoargote and Alejandra Gonzalez-Arranz 8-3. The lone point for the Jaguars came by an 8-5 score in the second line, where Merye Gobernate and Ana Faria topped Kristen Jones (Marietta) and Emma Niemi (Cumming).

Lopez got the scoring started in second singles, polishing off Faria by 6-3 and 6-0 scores. In a pair of 6-2 sets, fifth singles finished next, as Garriga beat Marie Cantenot. The team victory point came from the nation's No. 33 singles player in Kelly, as she handled Miralles-Miro 6-0, 6-2.

Niemi came next in the sixth slot, beating Pinoargote 6-0, 6-3. The Bobcats' final team point came from third singles, where Richter topped Gobernate 7-6, 6-3. Augusta went home with one singles victory, doing so in the fourth slot, where Jones fell to Gonzalez-Arranz in a 3-6, 6-4, 13-11 marathon.

The Bobcats are back in action Friday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m., traveling to Young Harris College.
