Kelly Leads the Way for Bobcat Women’s Tennis at ITA Regionals

SUMTER, S.C. – The Georgia College Women's Tennis team has four singles players and a doubles pairing still alive after day two action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championship Saturday.

In Flight A Singles, senior Jena Kelly's (Lawrenceville, Georgia) run continued into the round of 16 after she buzzed past Daria Avram of Barton College, 6-3, 6-2. Kelly squares off with No. 5-seed Franziska Funke of Tusculum College tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.

In consolation play, Valeria Lopez (Galicia, Spain) beat Emmanuel College's Pearlian Mary Cipriano 6-0, 6-1. After a bye in round two, Lopez resumes round three action tomorrow. Senior Emma Niemi's (Cumming, Georgia) singles effort came to a close today with a consolation loss to Lexa Loden of the University of North Georgia, 6-1, 6-2.

In Flight B Singles, Emilia Richter (Berlin, Germany) nabbed another win, this time over No. 5-seed Marta Gomar of Newberry College, 6-2, 6-3. Richter meets Merye Gobernate of Augusta University in tomorrow's draw. Paula Garriga (Centelles, Spain) also takes a spot in the round of 16 after slipping past Marie Cantenot of Augusta 7-5, 4-6, 7-5. Next up is Laura Sanchez of Young Harris College.

In Flight A Doubles, Kelly and Lopez moved on to the quarterfinals with a tough 8-6 win over Julia Loos and Marta Pinol of Lincoln Memorial University. The Bobcat pairing's next challenge will come from Fantine Botella and Chloe O'Connor of Emmanuel. Niemi and Richter teamed for an 8-3 loss today to Tusculum's Funke and Katarina Majorova.

Action continues tomorrow, Oct. 1 at 8 a.m.
