SUMTER, S.C. – The Georgia College Women's Tennis team began play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Region Championships Friday, getting strong showings in singles and doubles.
In Flight A Singles, senior Jena Kelly (Lawrenceville, Georgia) upset No. 9-seed Claudia DeAndreis of Wingate University with a quick 6-0, 6-1 bout. Kelly advances to take on Barton College's Daria Avram in round two. Bobcat newcomer Valeria Lopez (Galicia, Spain) dropped a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 battle with Lincoln Memorial University's Marta Pinol.
Senior Emma Niemi (Cumming, Georgia) couldn't get past Catawba College's Sophie Hursch, also a three setter, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
In Flight B Singles, newcomer Emilia Richter (Berlin, Germany) needed three sets, but got the win over Celine Korteum of Columbus State University. Richter now faces Newberry College's Marta Gomar in the second round.
In Flight A Doubles, the Bobcats submitted two pairings and both advanced. No. 2 seeds Kelly and Lopez made short work of Francis Marion University's Sofia Henning and Anna Wintrich, 8-1. The Bobcat pair now draws LMU's Pinol and Julia Loos.
Richter and Niemi teamed for an 8-6 nail-biter over No. 4-seed Franziska Funke and Katarina Majorova of Tusculum College. Niemi and Richter now take on Wingate's DeAndreis and Michela Verpeli in tomorrow's action.
Action continues tomorrow at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
