MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Georgia College women’s tennis team came away with multiple singles and doubles wins Friday in day one of the GC Women’s Fall Championship at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility. Netters from UNC Pembroke, the University of Tampa, Lander University and Florida Tech were in action.
After a bye in the first round senior Kayla Barksdale (Augusta, Ga.) came away with a 7-5, 6-2 quarterfinal win over Leigh Ann McAfee of UNCP while in Flight “A” singles play. Ivana Marevic (Rottweill, Germany) won her round of 16 match 6-4, 6-3 against Katie Close of Florida Tech, but would lose 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals to Carolina Lainez of Lander.
Freshman Katie Krupp (Evans, Ga.) came away with a win in her first home match. She would down Charlotte Fahnehjelm of Florida Tech 6-0, 6-4. Krupp faced off against Kelsey Matthews of Tampa in the quarterfinal round, but would lose 6-2, 6-1.
Krupp’s day was not over, as she and Barksdale paired up in Flight “A” Doubles play. The GC duo would come away with an 8-2 victory in the quarterfinal round against Close and Jessica Vidmark from Florida Tech. Semifinal action would be pushed to the max with Krupp and Barksdale coming away with a 9-7 win over Cayce Bradley and Carolina Lainez of Lander.
Barksdale will continue in Flight “A” singles action tomorrow morning and will join Krupp in the Flight “A” doubles final tomorrow as well.
