SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Georgia College women's tennis team (16-11) entered the NCAA Southeast Subregional as the No. 4-seed, taking on the No. 5-seed Augusta State University (16-9). The Bobcats led throughout the morning and finished the match with a 5-3 victory.
Freshman Katie Krupp (Evans, Ga.) and senior Kayla Barksdale (Augusta, Ga.) paired together for their 18th doubles victory of the year, downing Victoria Lundqvist and Liv Petterson 8-2. Krupp and Barksdale defeated the Jaguar duo by the same score earlier this season, on senior day for the Bobcats.
"They were both big days for us when we played them and we came out pretty pumped on both occasions," said Krupp. "We just went out there and tried to play the way we always do."
Like their teammates, Ivana Marevic (Rottweil, Ga.) and May Johnson (Sydney, Australia) faced off against the same doubles team they played on senior day. The Bobcat duo defeated the tandem of Julia Fontaine and Roberta Oliveira by the score of 8-2, the second time Johnson and Marevic defeated Fontaine and Oliveira this season.
Michelle Lingner (Dunwoody, Ga.) and Sarah Murray (Alpharetta, Ga.) were pitted against Lissa Murakami and Maria Pimentel in the third doubles slot. The Bobcats fought throughout the game, keeping each game close, but eventually lost 8-1.
The Bobcats entered singles play tied 2-2 after they forfeited the No. 6 singles slot.
Johnson made quick work of Pettersson, earning a decisive 6-2, 6-3 victory. Murray, playing in the No. 5 slot for just the third time this season, battled Murakami, but would lose 6-1, 6-1.
Krupp was matched against Pimentel, the first set was a close 6-3, but the Bobcat freshman cruised to her 16th win of the season with a 6-0 second set.
While teammate Marevic battled into the third set of a marathon match against Lindqvist in the top singles slot, Barksdale clinched the victory for the team with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Oliveira.
