No. 19 Women’s Tennis Rolls to First PBC Victory, 7-2

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College women's tennis team (2-1) cruised to a 7-2 victory over the visiting Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes (2-2) on Saturday, notching their first Peach Belt win in as many tries.

Senior Kayla Barksdale (Augusta, Ga.) and freshman Katie Krupp (Evans, Ga.) put the Bobcats on the scoreboard early with an 8-5 victory over Carly Cangelosi and Victoria Ondo.

In the second doubles slot, senior May Johnson (Sydney, Australia) paired with Leah Pridgeon (Lawrenceville, Ga.) but they would fall 8-2 to Kalie Douberly and Taylor Jones.

Senior Michelle Lingner (Dunwoody, Ga.) and junior Ivana Marevic (Rottweil, Germany) would put the Bobcats up 2-1 after doubles with an 8-1 victory over Ginny Jones and Mollie McGowan.

The Bobcats would never relinquish this lead in singles play, as Marevic would defeat Douberly 7-6, 6-2 in the first singles slot for a 3-1 lead. Johnson played number two doubles and took down Congelosi 6-4, 6-0. Barksdale followed with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Ondo to clinch the Bobcats their first PBC win.

The only singles loss of the day for the Bobcats would come at the hand of Ginny Jones, who defeated Pridgeon 6-0, 6-2 in the fourth singles slot. The fifth and sixth Bobcat singles added to the final score with Krupp rolling 7-5, 6-2 over Taylor Jones and Linger defeating McGowan 6-0, 6-3 to give the Bobcats their 7-2 victory.

The Georgia College women's tennis team will be back in action Sunday, Feb. 17 at 1:30 p.m. when they host a conference match against No. 7 Columbus State.
