GC Women’s Tennis Dominates Fall Championships Day One
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College women’s tennis team got the Windstream GC Women’s Fall Championship started on the right foot Friday at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility. Facing top players from the University of Tampa, UNC Pembroke and ABAC, the Bobcat women responded with 10 victories on the day.
In singles action, the Bobcats entered May Johnson (Sydney, Australia), Ivana Marevic (Rottweil, Germany) and Kayla Barksdale (Augusta, Ga.) in Flight ‘A’. Barksdale picked up a first round win over UNCP’s Hannah Herlocker 6-2, 6-1 before getting knocked out in the quarterfinals by Tampa’s Thashia Garcia 7-6, 6-0.
Still alive in the flight are Johnson and Marevic, as the former made short work of Tampa’s Leslie Raymond 6-0, 6-1 and Marevic picked up a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Lauren Hewett of UT.
In Flight ‘B’ the Bobcats were undefeated, getting two wins from Lisa Setyon-Ortenzio (Paris, France) and one from Michelle Lingner (Dunwoody, Ga.). Setyon-Ortenzio downed Jenni Morgan 7-5, 7-5 before dispatching Madeline Dinunzio of UNCP 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals. Lingner won a 6-0, 6-2 bout with Shelby Bickel of UNCP for her trip to the semis.
Flight ‘C’ showed more success, as freshman Leah Pridgeon (Lawrenceville, Ga.) beat Brianna Ryan of Tampa 6-3, 6-3 and toppled Ryan’s teammate Kathleen Beckham 6-1, 6-1 for a semifinal berth. After Anna Hicks (Brunswick, Ga.) handled Haley Humphrey 6-1, 6-1, the Bobcat rookie lost in a marathon to Tampa’s Becky Ewing 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to end her singles run.
In Flight ‘A’ doubles, GC has two teams in the semifinals, as Marevic and Barksdale used a bye to get there, and Johnson and Lingner beat Garcia and Meg Wladimirski of Tampa 8-4.
In Flight ‘C’ the semis are also set, as Pridgeon and Setyon picked up two wins, beating Tampa’s Morgan and Ryan 8-5 before clobbering UT’s Tori Simon and Nikol Williams 8-1.
In short, five individuals and three doubles teams will be alive for flight championships tomorrow, Oct. 1.
