MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 16 Georgia College women's tennis squad (7-5, 4-4 PBC) picked up a solid Peach Belt Conference (PBC) win Saturday afternoon at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility, defeating Georgia Southwestern State University (6-9, 2-6 PBC) 8-1.
The victory evened GC's record in the PBC at 4-4, placing them sixth in the current standings.
Lisa Setyon-Ortenzio (Paris) and Kayla Barksdale (Augusta, Ga.) got things started off for the Bobcats at the top doubles spot, making quick work of Carly Cangelosi and Ginny Jones 8-0. The victory helped to improve the duo's record to an impressive 9-2 on the season.
The Bobcats rounded out the sweep of the doubles portion with Ivana Marevic (Rottweil, Germany) and Leah Pridgeon (Lawrenceville, Ga.) taking the third pairing 8-4 over Kalie Douberly and Melinda Vansant.
No. 19 Setyon-Ortenzio and doubles partner Barksdale would win by identical 6-2, 6-0 scores over Cangelosi and Ondo, respectively.
Holding down the second position for the Bobcats, No. 20 Johnson defeated Douberly easily 6-1, 6-0. At the third position Marevic defeated McGowan handily 6-3, 6-2, while Pridgeon topped Jones 7-5, 6-3 at the fifth spot.
The 'Canes picked up their sole victory at the final position, as Vansant defeated Sara Roberts (Kennesaw, Ga.) in thrilling fashion 2-6, 7-5, 10-4.
The GC women will host No. 7 Columbus State University tomorrow at 2 p.m. from the Centennial Center Tennis Facility.
