PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 30 Georgia College women's tennis team (9-4) lost a tough match to the University of West Florida (12-9) in the White Sands Invitational at the Ralph Carson Tennis Complex Wednesday afternoon, 7-2.
The Bobcats fell down early in the doubles portion, 2-1. Kayla Barksdale (Augusta, Ga.) and Bertille Lion (Lyon, France) took GC's first match of the day but finished last, downing Luiza Sennervig and Jacqueline March, 8-5. The Bobcats' first doubles pair is now 7-5 on the season.
It would not start well in the doubles part of the match for the 'Cats as May Johnson (Sydney, Australia) and Michelle Lingner (Dunwoody, Ga.) dropped their first match of the season as a doubles pair, falling to Taylor Brewster and Caitlyn Baines, 8-1. Lisa Setyon (Paris, France) and Kelly Edwards (Roswell, Ga.) were also defeated by Yana Bokareva and Hannah Durham, 8-4.
GC only managed to come away with one victory in singles even though three matches went to tie-breakers. Setyon finished last but got the only win in singles for the 'Cats defeating Baines in a marathon 7-5, 3-6, 10-7. Setyon improves to 9-2, all out of the fifth slot.
Lion played in the No. 1 slot and was toppled by Brewster, 6-3, 6-0. Johnson lost in straight sets to Sonnervig in second singles, 6-2, 6-3. Barksdale dropped her match in third singles to Bokareva, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, snapping her winning streak of four.
Lochner played out of the No. 4 spot but was downed by the Argo's March, 6-1, 6-1. Lingner played out of the No. 6 spot but lost in a tie-breaker to Higa, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
The Bobcats will continue the White Sands Invitational hosted by West Florida against No. 27 Drury University tomorrow, March 24 at 10 a.m. central time.
