MARTINEZ, Ga. – Junior Bertille Lion (Lyon, France) of the No. 30 Georgia College & State University women’s tennis team (7-7, 3-4 PBC) was named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week Tuesday. This is the first such honor for the Bobcats this season.
Lion went 3-0 in singles this past week as the Bobcats went 2-1 as a team. The junior began with a straight-sets win over the University of Montevallo’s Kristi Kelly 6-0, 6-2. Lion then won the first set against the University of North Alabama’s Lenka Hola before Hola retired prior to the second set.
She then was the deciding point in Georgia College’s 5-4 win over Delta State University at the White Sands Invitational, beating Lucia Laws 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the only three-set singles match. All three matches were played at No. 3 singles and Lion is 8-3 at the spot for the year, going 9-3 in overall singles play.
In doubles action, the junior teamed with Diane Danna (Paris) to shutout Montevallo in the first slot 8-0 for her doubles win of the week.
Georgia College has now won five of these awards in the history of the honor, beginning in the 2002 season. The last Bobcat to win it was Celine Martin March 10, 2008.
