Sundstrom Added to Georgia College Hall of Fame Class


MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Georgia College Department of Athletics is pleased to announce its 2009 class for the Georgia College Athletic Hall of Fame. Over the next two days, the members of the next induction class will be revealed. Next up is former Bobcat tennis playerAnna (Haggkvist) Sundstrom.

Sundstrom was a two-time All-American for Georgia College, pulling down honors in 1997 and 1998. She played under GCSU Hall of FamerDuward Whelchel from 1996-1999, earning four All-Peach Belt Conference (PBC) trophies.

She was named the NCAA Region Senior Player of the Year in 1999, earning the ITA Rolex Regional Singles title in 1995 and regional doubles champ in 1997. She was also named the 1999 GCSU Female Senior Athlete of the Year.

"It is a great honor for me to be selected to the GCSU Athletic Hall of fame," said Sundstrom. "My time as a tennis player at GCSU means a lot to me and is still one of the best times of my life. To receive this honor brings back all the great memories from Georgia."

Sundstrom joins previous inductees Jennifer Joiner from softball, Phil Arp,John KurtzRusty Kea and Tom Gorman from baseball, Whelchel, Julia Roudkovskaya and Lilia Biktyakova from tennis, Robert Williams andJulius Joseph from men's basketball, Sherita Ballard from women's basketball, David Robinson and Alex McMichael from golf, Missy (Thomas) Swicord from gymnastics and former athletic director and golf coach Michael Peeler.

Sundstrom, Jay TorrenceGreg Winters and one other new inductee will be honored as part of Homecoming/Alumni Weekend Saturday, Feb. 21. They will be recognized at halftime of the men's game of a basketball doubleheader against Francis Marion University and again at a formal ceremony in the Magnolia Ballroom, tentatively set for an 8 p.m. start.
