MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The No. 22 women's tennis squad of Georgia College & State University (8-9, 5-5 PBC) swept through the North Georgia Saints (6-14, 1-7 PBC) today (April 9) 9-0.
The Bobcats got off to a quick 3-0 lead as they slashed through doubles competition. The largest margin of victory came at third doubles, where Adriana Acuna (Peachtree City, Ga.) and Angy Cuellar (Bogota, Colombia) defeated Katherine Harrison and Mallory Perloff 8-1.
At first doubles, the duo of Gabby Acuna (Peachtree City, Ga.) and Marjorie Ceppo (Sao Paulo, Brazil) took down North Georgia's Velina Boteva and Maria Dreaden by the score of 8-2. The Bobcat twosome of Diane Danna (Paris, France) and Bertille Lion (Lyon, France) beat the Saint pair of Meredith Cash and Ashley Marie Jordan 8-3 at second doubles. Danna and Lion jump over the .500 mark at 9-8 on the spring.
Adriana Acuna shut out Perloff at the sixth singles slot 6-0, 6-0, which was the largest margin of victory in singles. The Bobcat picked up her second career win.
At first singles, No. 47 Ceppo defeated Boteva 6-4, 6-2 which puts Ceppo at 9-8 on the year. Danna dominated Dreaden 6-1, 6-0 at second singles. Danna improves to 9-8 in singles action on the 2009 campaign. Ceppo, Danna and Lion are all tied for the team's highest singles victories this season.
In the third slot, Lion served French fries to Cash 6-1, 6-1 at third singles. Lion also has a 9-8 singles record. Gabby Acuna moves to 8-9 on the year with her 6-0, 6-1 victory over North Georgia's Harrison.
Cuellar cruised by Jordan 6-0, 6-2 at number five singles. Cuellar nets an 8-9 mark on the season.
The win wraps up the regular season for Georgia College. The Bobcats finish with a 5-5 mark in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play, and with matches still remaining, could finish as high as fifth or as low as seventh.
The Bobcats are back in action for the PBC Tournament April 17-20 hosted by Clayton State University, opponents and times are still to be determined.
