MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College soccer program and head coach Hope Clark kick off the 2012 campaign on the road Friday, Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m., battling host No. 9 Lenoir-Rhyne University at the L-R Classic.
The Bobcats finish up the two-game tournament with a match against Lees-McRae College Sunday, Sept. 2 at 2 p.m.
Bobcat soccer showed the signs of its youthful roster in 2011, as all 12 of the team’s freshman saw quality minutes during the season. The Bobcats took on a tough southeast region schedule, picking up five wins, but four of them coming in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play. The goalkeeping duo of Taylor Cornelius (Dacula, Ga.) and Annie Stephens (Fayetteville, Ga.) were equal to the task in 2011, as all five of the team’s wins came via shutout.
The Bobcats were in every game, with 11 of the squad’s 14 losses coming by one goal each. The Bobcats took the No. 8-seed in the PBC Tournament, traveling to PBC Regular-Season Champion Armstrong. GC gave the Pirates a run for their money, falling eventually 1-0 on a second-half goal. Cornelius made 14 saves and was named to the PBC All-Tournament Team.
At the end of the season, graduated midfielder Karen Bonilla was chosen to the All-PBC Second Team, just the third player in program history to take all-conference honors three times in her career.
The Bobcats return four of their top six scorers from 2011, including rookie Ashley Veilleux (Monroe, Ga.) who tallied five goals and three assists in her freshman campaign. The Bobcats have four seniors to lead the squad this season, including three-year defensive starter Jamie Colcord (Marietta, Ga.).
