Late Flurry Downs GC Soccer 3-2

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – With three goals coming in a 16 minute stretch late in the second half, the Georgia College soccer squad (3-4, 0-2 PBC) dropped its Peach Belt Conference (PBC) home opener 3-2 to Lander University (4-1-2, 2-0 PBC) Wednesday at Bobcat Field.

Tied 1-1 at halftime, an Alexis Rogers penalty kick gave Lander a 2-1 lead with 19:39 left on the clock.

Undaunted, the Bobcats responded 1:41 later with a goal to tie it up. Sophomore Erin Griffin (Lawrenceville, Ga.) found senior Haley O'Hayer (Savannah, Ga.) on the right side, who fired the ball into the upper left corner for her second goal of the season.

Looking like the game was heading to overtime, Lander used some brilliant passing to nab the lead again. Kimberly Kesler dribbled into the right corner, crossed to Kendall Couch at the top of the box, who sent it along to Jamie Shaw on the left-side for the go-ahead goal. Shaw now has a team-best five on the season.

The first half featured a goal on each side, with this time the Bobcats striking first. Just 15:10 into the contest, sophomore Ashley Veilleux (Monroe, Ga.) got the Bobcats on the board with her second goal of the season, off a pass from classmate Abby Dalton (Macon, Ga.).

It took over 12 minutes, but the Bearcats would respond, as Kendall Couch headed in a towering pass from Hillary Ferguson.

Bobcat goalkeeper Annie Stephens (Fayetteville, Ga.) finished the contest with six saves in nine tries, while Bearcat netminder Kelsey Blair made as many saves in the win.

A fairly even contest, Lander out-shot the Bobcats by a slim 21-16 margin.

The Bobcats hit the road for two contests, starting with No. 5 North Georgia Saturday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m.
