HICKORY, N.C. – The Georgia College women's soccer team (1-1) broke the win column for the first time this young season, taking down Lees-McRae College (0-1-1) by a 1-0 score Sunday in the final day of the L-R Classic at Lenoir-Rhyne University.
Sophomore Erin Griffin (Lawrenceville, Ga.) netted the first goal of the season for GC, providing the difference in the victory.
The teams reached the halftime horn in a scoreless tie, and it was with 16:01 remaining on the second-half clock that Griffin provided the game-winner, a total of 73:59 into the contest.
After an offside call on the Blue and Green, GC got possession back from LMC. Sophomore Kessler Matheson (Martinez, Ga.) sent a cross from the left side, finding Griffin at point-blank range to fire it home.
LMC doubled-up Georgia College 24-12 on shots, keeping the GC goalkeeper tandem of Taylor Cornelius (Dacula, Ga.) and Annie Stephens (Fayetteville, Ga.) on their respective toes. Stephens took the second half and was slightly busier at seven saves in the win, while Cornelius recorded four. Kaitlyn Briggs made seven saves in eight tries to take the loss.
Today's contest was the first meeting between the two Bobcat-mascot schools, and GC has now recorded shutouts in each of its last six victories, dating back to the 2010 season.
