GC Soccer Road Woes Continue, Drop Third Straight at North Alabama
FLORENCE, Ala. – Having been edged by a goal each in two straight conference matches, the Georgia College women's soccer squad (3-8) delved into a mid-season non-conference match, attempting to halt a two-game losing streak. Unfortunately, the Bobcats could not right the ship Tuesday night at the University of North Alabama (9-2), falling 2-1.
A previous NSCAA Top 25 team reaching as high as No. 18 this season, North Alabama proved to be too much offensively for the Bobcats. GC was recorded as out shot 29-1, including 10-1 in shots on goal.
The Lions quickly struck first in the match. In the first forty-five seconds, UNA junior forward Chloe Roberts drove the field and netted her eighth goal of the campaign.
Playing a goal down for much of the first frame, the Bobcats were able to gain a neutralizer towards the end of the first half. Freshman forward Erin Griffin (Lawrenceville, Ga.) made good on the first shot of her college career, while classmate Ashley Veilleux (Monroe, Ga.) was credited with the assist, her second of the year. Both teams would head into intermission even at 1-1.
In the second half, the offensive attack continued for the Lions; within the first 10 minutes of the frame, the Lions again tallied a goal. North Alabama senior midfielder Hollie Loud punched in the second of her season in the 54th minute and the Bobcats would fail to answer.
The freshman goalkeeper pairing of Annie Stephens (Fayetteville, Ga.) and Taylor Cornelius (Dacula, Ga.) split the match, with Stephens making four first-half saves in five tries, and Cornelius matching the tally in the second. Alex McClay went the distance in the win, making no saves.
This game marked the third time this year the Bobcats have played either a current or previous nationally-ranked opponent. Additionally, the Bobcats have five games remaining against teams that were or are ranked in the NSCAA Top-25.
Georgia College returns to Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play Saturday, Oct. 8 at 3 p.m. taking on Columbus State University at home.
