Georgia College Soccer Sweeps Pirate Soccer Shootout
SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Georgia College & State University women's soccer team (2-0) outlasted Florida Southern College (0-2) 1-0, today (Aug. 30) to close the AASU Pirate Soccer Shootout. The shutout is the second for the Bobcats this season, in as many games. Georgia College now has shutouts in its last five regular-season matches.
Things looked promising for Georgia College early on as senior forward Jamie Nevin (Grovetown, Ga.) hooked up with sophomore Megan McAlpin (Newnan, Ga.) and netted the only goal of the match in the eighth minute. The goal was lucky number 13 for Nevin in her career, as she remains the school's active leader in scoring.
The Mocs tried to strike back out-shooting the Bobcats 15-7, including a 9-2 edge in the second period. This kept Bobcat goalkeeper Jessica Binkowski (Cumming, Ga.) on her toes, grabbing four saves for the contest with a complete-game effort. Florida Southern goalie Marina Tng Billing collected two saves, both in the second period.
"It was a hard-fought win today," said GCSU head coach Juan Pablo Favero. "Playing games back-to-back and on a very heavy field due to the rain, I'm proud of our girls for fighting their way through. We shut down a pretty potent offensive attacking team today."
The Bobcats start the season 2-0 for the first time in the six-year program's history.
The ‘Cats are back in action Friday, Sept. 4, hosting the first Bobcat Shootout tournament as they take on Catawba College (0-0-1) in the home opener at 8 p.m. Catawba most recently tied Pfeiffer University 2-2 Aug. 29.
