Georgia College head coach Maurice Smith wasted no time making his mark in the Bobcat record books, leading his 2010-11 squad to a Peach Belt Championship in just his first season at the helm.

Now beginning year number seven as head coach, Smith has guided his squad to three PBC Tournament title games and an 88-80 overall record.

After a 2011-12 season that involved some struggles, the 2012-13 season brought much more success. The Bobcats started off the year going on a seven-game winning streak. Smith’s squad ended the year with an over all record of 12-14 and 8-11 in the PBC.

The 2013-14 season saw even more improvement, concluding with an overall record of 18-11 and 9-10 in the PBC. The team made it to the PBC Tournament championship game where they fell just short of a victory to Columbus State University. They also received the PBC Team Sportsmanship Award.

The 2014-15 season brought another 16 victories, including 10 in conference play. The Bobcats once again advanced to the PBC Tournament final, again falling one win short of the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

In 2015-16, the Bobcats again won 16 ballgames, earning a slot in the PBC Quarterfinals, a loss at Lander. Kadesha Gibbs took a slot on the All-PBC Team.

In his six seasons, Smith has produced nine All-PBC Team selections, and the second All-American in program history in Chimere Jordan. The Bobcats also picked up their first two Academic All-American honors in program history, both for Shanteona Keys.

Smith has spent over 17 years at Georgia College, arriving first as a player in 1999 after two seasons at Wallace Community College in Alabama. He was an All-Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Second Team selection in 2001 for the Bobcats, after playing a sixth-man role on the best team in program history, the 1999-2000 Elite Eight squad.

He then joined the coaching ranks, first as a student assistant for men’s basketball in 2003-04. He then continued on as a graduate assistant coach for two seasons from 2004-06. Smith moved to the women’s side the next season in 2006-07 as the assistant coach and has worked with Bobcat women’s basketball program since.

Success has followed Smith at Georgia College, as a player on the top team in program history in 1999-2000, the team went 25-6, winning the PBC Championship and the NCAA South Atlantic Region title. As a graduate assistant coach on the men’s staff in 2005-06, Smith helped guide the team to a 22-9 record, another PBC Championship and a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16.

While with the women’s program, Smith has acquired two 20-win seasons in 2006-07 and 2009-10. The 2006-07 team advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16, and in 2012-13 the Bobcats won the PBC West Division Championship.

Smith finished his undergraduate degree in 2001, adding a master’s in 2006. Originally from College Park, Ga., he finished high school in Americus, Ga., Smith married the former Martine Thomas, also a Georgia College graduate. The two live in Milledgeville and have two daughters, Jaiden and Olivia.
