GC Women’s Basketball Edged in Season Opener versus #21 Wingate, 65-56

MORROW, Ga. – The Georgia College Women's Basketball team (0-1) fell short in a matchup with #21 Wingate University (1-0) Friday evening at the PCB-SAC Conference Challenge hosted by Clayton State University, 65-56.

The Bobcats had two players in double figures on the evening with seniors Sydney Cleveland (Gainesville) and Erin Drynan (Chicago, Illinois) leading the charge. Cleveland poured in 11 points on four made buckets, including two three pointers. Drynan scored 10 and nearly had a double-double with seven rebounds, five of which came on the offensive end.

In a relatively low scoring battle, the stingy Bobcat defense held Wingate to just 36.7 percent shooting on the contest and held a lead multiple times. Wingate scored 19 of their points from the freethrow line.

Edging Wingate by one point at halftime, 28-27, Georgia College saw their edge slip away in a tight third quarter defensive battle. The Bobcats managed just 8 points in the third; however they rallied for 20 in the fourth quarter but could not regain the lead.

Christen Copeland (Covington) and Kenyatta Storms (Alpharetta) helped run the Bobcat offense, each with a trio of assists and a combined eight points.

The Bobcat women have a quick turnaround, as they face Anderson (S.C.) University on day two of the Conference Challenge. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
