GC Women’s Basketball Falls 75-52 in Season Opener

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College women's basketball team (0-1) dropped their season opener Saturday at the Centennial Center as the University of West Georgia (1-0) rode hot three-point shooting to a 75-52 victory.

Sophomore Shanteona Keys (Roswell, Ga.) led the Bobcats in scoring with14 points on 5-of-16 shooting. Keys also pulled down five rebounds. Junior Abby Slocumb (Suwanne, Ga.) tied for the team led in rebounds with sophomore Belinda Schaafsma (Momence, Ill.), both finishing with six.

Offensively West Georgia was led by Mone Peoples, who scored 21 points on 9-for-13 from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc. Taylor Turgeon finished with 16 points on 5-of-11 from the field and 4-of-9 for three.

Junior Tara Wornica (Petersburg, Ind.) played well in her first game as a member of the Bobcats, going 4-of-6 from the field and 5-of-9 from the charity stripe. She finished with 13 points and three rebounds.

The Bobcats trailed 42-24 after the first half, after the Wolves hit 8-of-17 from behind the arc. After some halftime adjustments, the second half was much more evenly matched at 33-28. The Wolves hit just 3-of-13 shots from behind the arc in the second half. The Wolves shot 45.2% from the field for the game, while the Bobcats shot 33.3%.

The Bobcats will regroup and head to Dahlonegha, Ga. next weekend. They'll take part in the Lady Saints Tip-Off Classic, facing off against the University of West Florida and Carson-Newman College. The first game for the Bobcats will be against West Florida coming Friday, Nov. 16 at 4 p.m. and second will be against Carson-Newman Saturday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m.
