SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Georgia College women's basketball team (3-10, 1-3 PBC) recorded their first Peach Belt Conference (PBC) victory of the season stymieing the Armstrong Pirates (8-5, 3-3 PBC), 57-45 Monday night.
The Bobcats grabbed the lead on an early layup by freshman cornerstone Shanteona Keys (Roswell, Ga.) to go up 2-0 and never looked back, holding the lead for 38 straight minutes. GC opened up its largest first-half lead going on a 6-0 run to go up 15-7. Keys finished with 19 points on 5-of-10 (.500) shooting, contributing three rebounds and three assists to the effort.
A high scoring half had the Bobcats ahead by double-digits only five minutes into the second stanza, 35-24. The Pirates went on a run of their own to pull within four but that is as close as the game would get as the 'Cats pulled away extending their lead to 15 points and eventually finishing off Armstrong.
Sophomore leader Krysta Lewis (Woodstock, Ga.) scored 13 on 6-of-13 shooting. Freshmen Mikalyn DeFoor (Gainesville, Ga.) and Enisha Donley (Loganville, Ga.) chipped in 11 and 10, respectively. Donley had a near double-double grabbing nine boards. She also dished out four assists and had one steal. Demisha Mills was the only Pirate in double-digits recording 13 points and grabbing seven rebounds.
GC shot 22-of-52 (.423) from the field and shot a sub-par 55.6% (10-18) from the free throw line. The 'Cats stout defense held Armstrong to just .255 (13-51) shooting from the field and 1-of-10 (.100) from beyond the arc. The Bobcats had the slight rebounding edge 42-40 holding Mauri Wells, the No. 1 rebounder in the country to just eight boards. The turnovers were tied at 18 apiece.
The Bobcats come home for a two-game home stint against PBC foes No. 14 USC Aiken and Augusta State University. GC plays USC Aiken Saturday, Jan. 14 set for a 1:30 p.m. tipoff.
