Bobcats Drop Heartbreaker at Saints, 59-57
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Georgia College women's basketball team (2-10, 0-3) held a 57-55 lead with 30 seconds to play, but a late three along with a free-throw from Flagler College (2-10, 1-5 PBC) in the waning seconds downed the Bobcats 59-57 Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats and Saints scored 30 points apiece in the second half, but a two point Flagler lead heading into the half proved to be the difference in the contest between two teams seeking their first Peach Belt Conference (PBC) victories.
Freshman Shanteona Keys (Roswell, Ga.) led all scorers with a career-high 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor, including a 7-of-8 performance from the charity stripe.
Sophomore Krysta Lewis (Woodstock, Ga.) added 12 points of her own, grabbing six boards and dishing out a pair of assists. Freshman Enisha Donley (Loganville, Ga.) added eight points and eight rebounds to the effort with four assists.
It was an extremely evenly-played game, as GC led the assist battle 16-13, while dropping the turnover battle 19-14.
Trailing 54-53 with 2:09 to play, Keys would knock down back-to-back lay-ups to give the 'Cats a 57-55 advantage.
A late three from Flagler's Taye'Lor Trotter would prove to be the deciding score, preventing GC from notching their first PBC win of the year.
Trotter finished with 14 points, including four threes, second on the squad behind Charlsea Owen's 15. Treva Mason added 12 to the cause, but it was her 20 rebounds—including 15 on the offensive glass—that wowed the crowd.
Georgia College remains on the road, heading to Savannah, Ga., to take on the Pirates of Armstrong Monday, Jan. 9 at 5:30 p.m.
