DeFoor’s 17 Not Enough as GC Falls to Limestone, 76-63

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Freshman guard Mikalyn DeFoor (Gainesville, Ga.) enjoyed the best game of her young career, pouring in 17 points, but it was not enough as the Georgia College women's basketball (2-8) team faltered down the stretch en route to a 76-63 loss at the hands of the Limestone College Saints (7-4) in the final game of the Stair South Holiday Classic.

DeFoor was magnificent all game long, going 6-of-8 from the field including 5-of-6 from downtown. Her 17 points were tied for the game-high, while also adding an assist and a steal.

Fellow freshman Shanteona Keys (Roswell, Ga.) contributed 16 points of her own, also adding five assists and a steal. Her effort, paired with her 10 points in the Bobcats previous game, earned her a spot on the Stair South Holiday Classic All-Tournament Team.

The Bobcats held their own against a stingy Limestone defense, trailing by just three points heading into halftime. An early second half run gave the 'Cats a 40-35 edge at the 14:03 mark, but the Saints would battle back to knot the game at 53 with 7:47 left.

Limestone refused to surrender the lead the remainder of the game, despite a valiant effort from DeFoor and the rest of the Bobcat attack.

Sophomore forward Abby Slocumb (Suwannee, Ga.) played a well-rounded game, scoring 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting, grabbing seven rebounds, as well.

The biggest discrepancy in the box score came at the free-throw line, where the Bobcats shot just 66.7 percent (10-of-15), while the Saints shot 87 percent (20-of-23). Limestone went a staggering 17-of-19 in the second frame, eliminating any hope of a Bobcat comeback.

Strangely enough, GC shot a better percentage from beyond-the-arc (56.3 percent) than from the field (43.1 percent).

The rebounding edge leaned slightly towards Limestone, 31-29, but the Bobcats won the assist battle 14-12.

The Saints relied heavily on their bench this afternoon, generating 47 points to just 12 from GC.

Georgia College is back in action Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 5:30 p.m. when they head to Columbus State University to take on the Cougars in a Peach Belt Conference (PBC) matchup.
