Bobcat Rally Falls Short at Saints, 65-57

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The Georgia College women's basketball team (2-6, 0-1 PBC) would rally to cut a once 14-point deficit to just five with 2:23 to play, but the valiant effort was a little too late as the Bobcats were eventually downed by the Saints of North Georgia (4-2, 1-0 PBC), 65-57, Wednesday night at Memorial Hall.
The GC turnaround was fueled by a nearly mistake-free second half that saw the Bobcats turn the ball over just once, compared to eight from the Saints.
Freshman Shanteona Keys (Roswell, Ga.) played exceptional in her first Peach Belt Conference (PBC) matchup, torching the Saints defense for 18 points and five assists, going a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line.
Sophomore Krysta Lewis (Woodstock, Ga.) and freshman Belinda Schaafsma (Momence, Ill.) added 10 points apiece, as Schaafsma just missed out on a double-double with nine boards. Lewis corralled five rebounds herself, adding an assist in the process.
Trailing 52-38 with 9:19 remaining in the game, Georgia College managed to go on a 13-4 run over the next five minutes to cut the lead to five. There, the 'Cats seemed to run out of gas, never managing to get any closer as they eventually fell 65-57.
GC played a relatively clean game, committing just eight turnovers to 14 from North Georgia. The Bobcats also continued to cash in at the charity-stripe, hitting 83.3 percent (10-of-12) from the line.
Georgia College's downfall came on the glass tonight, as the Bobcats were out-rebounded by the Saints 49-35.
The Saints also boasted the game's high-scorer in Division I transfer Jaymee Carnes, who poured in 23 points.
The Bobcats will get to enjoy the next two weeks off before heading back to Milledgeville to host the Stair South, Inc. Holiday Classic Friday, Dec. 30 and Saturday, Dec. 31. GC will square-off against No. 19 Tusculum College Friday before taking on Limestone College Saturday.
