Huffin Nets 1,000th Career Point in 67-43 Bobcat Win

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Senior guard Dominique Huffin (Tucker, Ga.) scored her 1,000th career point Wednesday night, as the Georgia College women's basketball team (7-1) crushed Newberry College (5-4) 67-43 in day one of the Georgia College Holiday Classic at the Centennial Center.

Huffin got the milestone with her first bucket from the field at the 12:12 mark in the first half. She finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Classmate Chimere Jordan (Gray, Ga.) led all scorers with 23 points, adding seven boards and three steals. Chipping in with 12 points and nine rebounds off the bench was junior Tammeisha Law (Athens, Ga.). Jordan now has three straight games with 20-plus scoring, and owns a 16-game streak of double-digit scoring.

Law had 11 points in the first 4:30 of the second half, helping push the Bobcat advantage into 20-plus points. The lead reached its height with 4:48 left in the second period, when a Jordan jumper made the score 65-38.

The Bobcats trailed just once in the contest, when a Helen McKinney three-pointer made the score 11-9 with 9:46 left in the first half. GC responded with a 22-10 run over the remainder of the half, leading 31-19 at the break.

McKinney finished with 22 points with five three pointers but got little help, as no other Newberry player had more than five points.

The Bobcats out-rebounded the Wolves 46-31, including a 15-8 advantage on the offensive glass. GC allowed a season-low 27.5 defensive shooting percentage (14-51).

Huffin becomes the 12th women's basketball player at GC to join the 1,000-point club, standing at 1,011. She is 85 behind No. 11 Allison Barry (1988-92).

GC now leads the all-time series with Newberry 7-1. The 'Cats are 5-0 in night games this season. The victory was the seventh in the first season of head coach Maurice Smith. He is one behind the first coach in school history, Laura Golden who ranks fourth in school coaching wins.

The Bobcats are back in action hosting Wingate University (6-3) tomorrow, Dec. 30 at 3 p.m. The Bulldogs most recently beat UNC Pembroke tonight 70-65.
