Bears Hand Bobcats First Loss, 65-63
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Georgia College & State University women's basketball (2-1) opened up the home season with a hard-fought loss, taking Lenoir-Rhyne University (2-0) to the wire 65-63 tonight (Nov. 18) in the Centennial Center.
After a free-throw put the Bears up 64-61 with 13 seconds left, sophomore Dominique Huffin (Tucker, Ga.) grabbed a missed three-point attempt, and another carom from her own short miss before finishing off with a lay-in to cut the lead to one with five seconds left.
A quick foul resulted in LRU's knocking down one of two free throws, putting the game at the eventual final 65-62. Junior guard Daniela Nopuente's (Daly City, Calif.) off-balance running three-point attempt from the left side was just short as the horn sounded.
Senior Tiauna Brantley (Woodstock, Ga.) was one off her career-high with 18 points, also yanking down five rebounds. Frontcourt mate Antoinette Reames (Orlando, Fla.) was one carom shy of the team's first double-double this season, posting 11 points and nine rebounds. Huffin finished with 10 points.
The free-throw line, which had been so kind to the Bobcats against Tougaloo College (33-43), hurt Georgia College tonight, as it hit just 44 percent (10-23), including 33 percent in the second half. The Bobcat bench helped keep the game close, as GCSU reserves out-scored LRU's 21-10. The Bobcats also hit seven three-pointers, compared to Lenoir-Rhyne's two.
Bear center Denise Moore was tough, hitting 6-of-6 from the charity stripe en route to a 22-point game with seven boards. Guards Amber Holt and Cameron Sealey had 18 and 10 points, respectively.
The Bobcats are back in action Monday, Dec. 1, as they attempt to get revenge by traveling to Lenoir-Rhyne. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. in Hickory, N.C.
