MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College softball squad (8-10) split with the University of West Georgia Wolves (4-4) Wednesday night, losing the first 7-3 and taking the second 5-2.
The first game saw the Bobcats fall quickly after a five-run second inning by the Wolves. Nicole Yancey took a Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) pitch opposite field for a grand slam as part of a five-run second.
The Bobcats struck back in the bottom half, scoring a run on a Natalie Bellantoni (Oviedo, Fla.) double into the left centerfield gap. Freshman Kristen Humphries (Columbus, Ga.) entered the game in the sixth and delivered a pinch-hit two-run double, but that was all the offense the Bobcats would see in game one.
The second contest turned out much better for the 'Cats as Sabrina Chandler (Covington, Ga.) threw a gem. Chandler went seven innings, surrendering only one earned run and recording eight strikeouts. After hitting the first-game slam, Yancey wouldn't see another pitch, being intentionally walked six times.
GC's Frankie Walls (Dahlonega, Ga.) drove in a pair, finishing 1-for-2 on the afternoon. Humphries also drove in another, finishing 2-for-4 at the dish with three RBI on the day.
Sophomore Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) swiped two more bags today, making her a perfect 22-for-22 on the season. Her 22 stolen bases place her fourth on the all-time single-season stolen base list. Okvist is only 11 away from taking over the No. 1 spot from Leigh Jacobs (1996). Okvist's 46 career stolen bases ranks fourth in school history, just one behind Nickie Black (2000-03).
The Bobcats kick off the conference season hosting Francis Marion University in a doubleheader Sunday, Feb. 26 set for a noon start.
