MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College softball team
(0-2) dropped both games of their season-opening doubleheader
against Brewton Parker College (2-0) Wednesday afternoon at the
Peeler Complex.
In the first game, GC and Brewton Parker battled back and forth
throughout, with the ‘Cats eventually falling 4-3 in extra
innings. Freshman Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) kicked her
Georgia College career off with a bang, going 3-for-3 while scoring
a pair of runs in game one. Junior catcher Anna Parker
(Columbus, Ga.) also enjoyed a good game as she went 1-for-2 with a
game-tying home run in the bottom of the sixth.
Junior pitcher Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) was the hard-luck
loser, falling to 0-1 on the season. Burnett went eight
innings, scattering four hits and allowing only three earned runs
while fanning four.
The Bobcats were able to force extra-innings with a valiant
comeback effort in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Maggie
Davis (Roswell, Ga.) drove in the tying run on a sacrifice fly to
right field. Unfortunately, the effort was not enough as Brewton
Parker mustered one run in the top of the extra set on an RBI
double by pitcher Crystal Chesser, ultimately delivering the
victory. Chesser threw all eight innings for the win.
In the second game, junior Caitlin Duvall (Douglasville, Ga.) got
the start on the mound, giving up only two earned runs in 4.2
innings of work. She didn’t receive much help from her
defense, which committed five errors leading to three unearned
runs.
Okvist played well in the second game, going 1-for-3 with a double
and a run scored. Freshman counterpart Alex Duvall
(Douglasville, Ga.) enjoyed a good game at the plate, as she went
1-for-2.
The Bobcats were unable to overcome their sloppy play in the field,
eventually dropping the game 7-1. Baron first baseman Leighann
Newberry went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of doubles. Myia
Ashmore picked up the win, allowing one unearned run on two hits
and striking out five over six innings.
Georgia College returns to the field Friday, Feb. 11 when they
travel to take on Queens University (N.C.) at 2 p.m. in another
doubleheader.
