AIKEN, S.C. – With their postseason hopes on the line, the Georgia College softball team (14-33, 9-11 PBC) delivered in a big way, sweeping USC Aiken (23-13, 6-10 PBC) 6-5 and 2-1. The Bobcats saved their best effort for last, getting the season's first sweep in the final regular season doubleheader.
The Bobcats used a late rally to storm passed the Pacers in game one. Trailing 4-1 heading into the top of fifth, GC exploded for five runs en route to the 6-5 victory.
Okvist was 3-for-4 on the game with a pair of runs and fellow freshman Lindsey Conway (Madison, Ga.) chipped in with a two-hit, two RBI performance of her own.
Freshman righty Chelsie Huffman (Powder Springs, Ga.) picked up yet another win in relief, improving her record to 3-4 on the year. Huffman shut the door on the Pacers, going 3 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on three hits.
Despite just three hits in game two, the Bobcats were able to prevail with the 2-1 win.
A stellar pitching performance from junior righty Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) helped pace Georgia College, as she went six strong innings, allowing just one unearned run and five hits. Burnett improves to 2-14 on the season.
GC rallied yet again, plating the go-ahead run in the top of the last frame. Freshman Corby Holmes (Social Circle, Ga.) scored the game-winner after reaching base on an error to lead off the inning. After another error and a sacrifice bunt, Holmes was plated by a fielder's choice off the bat of Conway.
The sweep couldn't have come at a better time, improving GC's Peach Belt Conference (PBC) record to 9-11. The Bobcats are currently sitting alone in the sixth seed following tonight's PBC action, waiting for the rest of the league to finish their regular-season schedule this weekend.
Following this weekend's games, the Bobcats will find out their fate in the PBC Tournament. If Georgia College does make the eight-team tournament, their first game will take place on Friday, April 15 at the Freedom Florence Complex in Florence, S.C.
