MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College softball team (12-33, 7-11 PBC) needed some heroics to earn a split with No. 23 Armstrong Atlantic (24-8, 9-5 PBC) on Senior Day at the Peeler Complex, taking game one 6-5 and dropping game two 10-7.
Junior Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) provided the solution as she belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh, propelling GC to a 6-5 game one victory. Unfortunately, the Bobcats missed out on a golden opportunity to sweep the Pirates as they dwindled away a four run seventh inning lead. They fell in game two 10-7.
In game one, rightfielder Kati Pickowitz (Keller, Texas) shined on Senior Day, as she went 2-for-3 with a run. Fellow senior Brandie Monroe (Savannah, Ga.) also went 2-for-3 with a run.
Freshman Lindsey Conway (Madison, Ga.) had a perfect game, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run. Classmate Chelsie Huffman (Powder Springs, Ga.) came up huge for the Bobcats in relief, going 2 2/3 strong no-hit innings. She picked up her second win of her short career.
Georgia College got out to a great start in game two, grabbing a 5-1 lead through five innings.
Much of that offensive output was provided by junior catcher Anna Parker (Columbus, Ga.), who was 4-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs. Monroe also went 2-for-4 in game two, driving in a pair and scoring once.
Unfortunately, the Bobcats were unable to close out the Pirates as they gave up six runs in the top of the last frame, eventually falling 10-7.
Despite the hard-luck loss, GC did pick up a big split over a nationally-ranked Peach Belt Conference (PBC) contender. The win puts the Bobcats within striking distance of the PBC Tournament heading into their final series. GC is 7-11 in PBC play, positioned in sole possession of the eighth and final playoff spot at the end of today's action.
Georgia College will head to USC Aiken for the final regular-season doubleheader Thursday, April 7 at 4 p.m. in what will ultimately determine the Bobcats postseason fate.
