Bobcat Softball Falls Twice to Railsplitters

by Matthew Dalby, sports information graduate assistant

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College softball team (5-17) fell in a pair of games against Lincoln Memorial University (12-4) Sunday afternoon at the Peeler Complex. The Bobcats dropped the first 6-5 and the second pairing 3-1.

Despite a great comeback effort, the 'Cats just couldn't squeeze out enough runs in game one, dropping the one-run contest 6-5.

A plethora of errors in the second inning led to an early 5-0 lead for Lincoln Memorial, but Georgia College would fight back.

The Bobcats put up a three-spot in the bottom of the third to bring the game within one run, but would not inch any closer.

Junior righty Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) threw great in relief, going 5 1/3 innings allowing just two hits while striking out seven.

Centerfielder Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) led the offensive charge as she went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run. Third baseman Maggie Davis (Roswell, Ga.) came off the bench to go 2-for-3 with a run.

In game two, starter Caitlin Duvall (Douglassville, Ga.) (1-3) had a gem going through four innings as she kept the Railsplitters at bay. However, GC was unable to hold onto their one-run advantage, eventually losing 3-1.

The Bobcats struggled to get anything going offensively as Lincoln Memorial pitcher Cierra Mudd (5-3) grabbed her second win of the day with a complete game one-hitter in game two.

The lone hit came from senior Lauren Potts (Gray, Ga.) who went 1-for-3. The Bobcats run came from Okvist, who scored on a passed ball in the first inning.

Georgia College will get back into Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play Tuesday, March 1 at 2 p.m. when they host Lander University.
