Georgia College Drops Two at Catawba

by Matthew Dalby, sports information graduate assistant

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Georgia College softball team (1-5) dropped a pair of games at Catawba College Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats lost the first game 9-1, and the second game 6-3.

In the first matchup, junior Sabrina Chandler (Covington, Ga.) got the start on the mound going just 2 1/3 innings. She allowed six earned runs, while walking six and striking out two while falling to 1-1.

At the plate the Bobcats could only muster three hits, all from different batters. Junior Maggie Davis (Roswell, Ga.) went 1-for-2 driving in the lone RBI that brought Haley Burnett (Columbus, Ga.) home. Freshman Whitney Okvist (Kennesaw, Ga.) continued her successful rookie campaign, going 1-for-3.

Catawba's Brittany Murray improved to 1-0 with a five inning complete game. Designated player Erin Witalison drove in three runs despite just going 1-for-1.

In game two of the doubleheader, GC put up a much better fight. Freshman pitcher Chelsie Huffman (Powder Springs, Ga.) went all six innings for the Bobcats, allowing just four runs while scattering 12 hits. Huffman was the hard-luck loser, falling to 0-2.

Burnett went 1-for-3 blasting her third home run of the year, a two run shot. Fellow junior Anna Parker (Columbus, Ga.) also went 1-for-3, driving in a run and scoring one.

The lack of offensive production from the Georgia College lineup hurt in game two, as they were only able to scratch four runs across the board on just seven hits.

The 'Cats will look to get the sticks going again when they visit the University of West Georgia Monday, Feb. 12 in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
