MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - After winning their first Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament title last year while competing mostly on the road, the Georgia College & State University softball team released their schedule today (Sept. 23) including a whopping 10 home games. Never one to shy away from a challenge, head coach Ginger Chaffinch has scheduled five nationally-ranked squads for the 2009 slate.
The team starts off their season with a typical three-tournament February schedule, but this season also mixing in three PBC matches and a South Atlantic Regional game. The first tournament is the Early Bird Invitational in Aiken, S.C. Feb. 7-8. The Lady Bobcats then travel to Augusta, Ga. to take on PBC opponent Augusta State University at 1 p.m.
The South Atlantic Region then faces off in Milledgeville at noon when the Lady ‘Cats battle Wingate University. Another PBC team Georgia Southwestern University comes to town Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. before the Georgia College leaves for their second tournament.
The Charger Chillout hosted by University of Alabama-Huntsville takes place Feb. 20-22 in Decatur, Ala. The team then travels back to Aiken, S.C. to take on PBC opponent USC Aiken Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. The last tournament wraps up in February at the Catawba Invitational Feb. 27 through March 1.
March is a packed month with at least 20 games, not including the University of West Georgia Tournament on March 6-7 in Carrollton, Ga. The first game brings No. 7 Barry University out of Miami, Fla. to Milledgeville March 4 at 3 p.m.
After the West Georgia tournament the team has an eight-game home-stand, compiling three regional games, four PBC contests and a meeting with a team who racked up an amazing 52-9 record last season.
The first region opponent is Tusculum College at 1 p.m. The Lander University and Georgia College alumnus now-Bearcat assistant coach Heather Jones arrive at Peeler Complex on March 16 at 2 p.m. Non-PBC opponents Carson-Newman College come March 18 at 1 p.m., No. 24 University of Alabama-Huntsville (2008 52-9) on March 22 at 1 p.m., followed by Catawba College on March 24 at 2 p.m.
The PBC then comes to town with UNC Pembroke on March 26 at 2 p.m., 2008 Regional Champion No. 5 Francis Marion University on March 28 at noon, and No. 23 Armstrong Atlantic University March 30 at 2 p.m.
April wraps up the PBC play for the Lady Bobcats as well as has a few more region match-ups. April Fools Day brings PBC runner-up No. 12 North Georgia College & State University at 3 p.m. On April 3 and 4 North Carolina is represented by Queens College at 2 p.m. and St. Andrews College at 2 p.m. Columbus State University then comes to Milledgeville on April 7 at 2 p.m.
The regular season then wraps up with Clark-Atlanta University on April 9 at 4 p.m. The Lady Bobcats will honor seven seniors before the CAU contest April 9.
Georgia College begins defense of their 2008 PBC Tournament title April 17-19.
