Bobcats Drop PBC Tournament Opener to Francis Marion 2-1

FLORENCE, S.C. - With just 10 total hits in the game, No. 2-seed Georgia College & State University (30-21) dropped its Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Tournament opener, a 2-1 decision to host No. 7-seed Francis Marion University (30-17) today at the Freedom Florence Complex.

The Patriots took advantage of five free passes, plating runs in the fourth and sixth for the win. Georgia College will have to battle back through the consolation bracket to defend its 2008 PBC Tournament title, taking on the winner of the No. 6-seed Columbus State University/No. 10-seed Lander University game later today.

PBC Player of the Year Sherquita Bostick (Florence, S.C.) got the Bobcats off on the right foot, swatting solo home run in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead.

The Patriots answered back in the fourth, getting a hit batsmen, two singles and a bases loaded walk to tie the game. Second baseman Ashley Jaramillo provided the winning run in the sixth, ripping a double to left center, scoring pinch runner Maria Goode for the 2-1 final. Jaramillo was the lone multi-hit performer for FMU, getting a 2-for-3 day.

Shortstop Lindsey Swanson (Kennesaw, Ga.) finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, and Bostick was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Michaela Wolf improved to 18-9 with the win, tossing all seven scattering five hits and fanning five. Senior righty Mandy Chandler (Covington, Ga.) fell to 25-12 with two earned runs and five whiffs.

The win was the second of the day for the Patriots, who will advance to play No. 3-seed USC Aiken tomorrow at 11 a.m. The Bobcats will take on the CSU/Lander winner tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
