GC Men’s Tennis Begin Regional Play Sunday Against Jaguars
INDIANAPOLIS – The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) released its Regional Brackets last night with the Southeast No. 4-seed Georgia College men's tennis team opening play against the Southeast fifth-seeded GRU Augusta, Sunday May 4 at Savannah, Ga. The matchup pits the same two teams from the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Quarterfinals from April 17, where the Bobcats defeated the Jaguars 5-0.
Each of the eight regions will have two teams advance from two pools to the Round of 16. The Southeast Region One (SE1) is comprised of five PBC teams, whereas Southeast Region Two (SE2) has four teams - two PBC teams with the Southeast Athletic Conference (SAC) and Conference Carolinas (CC) tournament champions.
In the SE1 field will be the Bobcats, GRU Augusta, University of North Georgia, USC Aiken and Armstrong Atlantic State University. The SE2 field will consist of Columbus State University, Lander University, Wingate University and the University of Mount Olive.
The Bobcats will begin their SE1 play against the Jaguars at 2 p.m. this Sunday. To advance to the Round of 16 the following week, Georgia College would have to win its following match May 5. The opponent would be either North Georgia, USC Aiken or tournament-host Armstrong.
If the Bobcats were to advance to the Round of 16, they would face one of the two winners of South Region at 4 p.m. at the National Championships May 14-17 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
The Bobcats finished the season 14-7 and ranked nationally at No. 21. As a fifth-seeded team in the PBC Tournament, they knocked off No. 4-seed GRU Augusta (18-6) before falling to the top-seeded Columbus State University 5-1.
Going into the Regionals, the Bobcats have been led in singles play by No. 33 Yannick Hass (Troisdorf, Germany) and Anton Waern (Taby, Sweden) with 15-5 records at the first and third spots, respectively.
The best doubles pair for Georgia College has been at the third spot. Sophomore Mattia Campus (Concorezzo, Italy) and freshman Kyle Kinsler (Suwanee, Ga.) have compiled a 14-7 record and scored the lone point in the PBC Semifinals against the Cougars.
The Georgia College Department of Athletics, two-time winners of the PBC Commissioner's Cup, sponsors 11 varsity athletic programs at the NCAA Division II level.
