AUGUSTA, Ga. – Georgia College sophomore Yannick Hass (Troisdorf, Germany) has been selected as the Peach Belt Conference Men's (PBC) Tennis Player of the Week, while helping the Bobcats tennis team to a 9-4 record. It is the first time this season the sophomore has been honored as he joins three other teammates who have also garnered the PBC honor this season.
Hass went 3-1 in singles play at the first position, and 3-1 in doubles at first doubles, as the Bobcats played two ranked opponents this past week.
Hass' only singles loss was against the Division II No. 1-ranked player Bruno Savi of No. 3 University of West Florida. Coming into the match, the undefeated Savi had only dropped one set all season, but Hass became only the second player this season to beat Savi in a set winning the first set 6-4 before falling in three. Hass only suffered one other loss this week, dropping his doubles match with partner Alex Schubert to West Florida's Savi and Tony Rajaobelina, 8-3.
After the first match of the week, Hass went a combined 6-0 against Tuskegee University, No. 21 GRU Augusta, and Davis & Elkins University. He defeated Oshane Trail of Tuskegee 6-0, 6-2 and at doubles with Schubert took down Trail and Andrew Knight 8-2.
Against No. 21 GRU Augusta, Hass was the only Bobcat to win at both singles and doubles, defeating Victor Cabellos 6-3, 6-3, then grinding out a 9-8 victory with Schubert over Cabellos and Victor Guimaraes. The final match of the week saw Hass defeat Vincent Harmon of Davis & Elkins 6-3, 6-2 in singles, and then Charles Brunel and Simon Meriau, 8-6 in doubles with Schubert.
Hass improved his Southeast Region ranking to No. 11 this past week, moving up five spots, and he and Schubert vaulted up to No. 5 in the region at doubles play after previously being unranked.
The men's tennis team next takes on No. 23 University of West Alabama Friday, March 28 at 2 p.m. at the Centennial Tennis Center Facility.
