SUMTER, S.C. - Georgia College tennis had a successful weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regionals in South Carolina capped with freshmen Taylor Powell (Martinez, Ga.) and Kenneth Cazort (Macon, Ga.) winning the ‘B’ Flight Doubles Championship.

The Bobcat duo were matched against upperclassmen most of Sunday, but didn’t let that slow them down. They won a close match in the semifinals 9-8 against sophomore Stan Roffe and junior Brahm Moolman of Mount Olive College. The Bobcat duo would then take on juniors Rodrigo Avila and Pablo Vidal of King College for the ‘B’ Flight championship match. Powell and Cazort would come away with an easy 8-3 victory to take the title.

Powell also finished his impressive first weekend of singles play for the GC men’s tennis on Sunday. He made it all the way to the ‘B’ Flight semifinal, but would fall there, losing to Lucas Guinski of Limestone College 6-4, 6-2.

Freshman Katie Krupp (Evans, Ga.) had an extremely successful first weekend as a Bobcat, making it all the way to the ‘B’ Flight semifinals. She would share a similar fate to Powell, and not make it past that round, losing 6-0, 6-3 to Peach Belt Conference (PBC) foe Esther Santiago of Flagler College.

The third freshman still in singles action on Sunday, Alex Nolley (Cumming, Ga.), was in ‘B’ Flight consolation play and faced off against David Espinosa of Flagler College. He would push Espinosa to the limit, but eventually dropped a 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 battle.

Johan Wadstein (Helsingborg, Sweden) and Tyler Franks (Greensboro, Ga.) were no longer in the ‘A’ Flight for singles, but they were still alive in doubles play. They started off the day with a win over Paulo Fernandes and Diego Zegarra from Lander University 8-3. Wadstein and Franks would battle another PBC opponent for the quarterfinals, Gordan Divljak and Quintin Rayniere from Columbus State University. In an extremely close match, the Bobcats would lose the heartbreaker 9-8.

The Bobcat women are back in action Friday, Oct. 5, hosting the annual GC Women’s Fall Championship. The GC men see their fall season come to a close.
