SUMTER, S.C. – Georgia College freshman Taylor Powell (Martinez, Ga.) saw his first two singles matches of his college career Saturday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regionals, the rookie coming away with two victories.

Powell won his morning match over Peach Belt Conference (PBC) foe Justin Louis of Flagler College 6-1, 6-2 before coming back in the afternoon and beating Junior Leonardo Brigato of King College 6-1, 6-4.

Powell would even carry his winning ways over to his doubles match alongside Kenneth Cazort (Macon, Ga.) as they took on Brigato and his teammate Junior Rafeal Francisco. The Bobcat freshmen tandem beat the upperclassmen from King 8-4.

With only two Bobcats left in the Flight ‘A’ regular play, Alex Schubert (Frankfurt, Germany) lost to Matus Mydla of Armstrong. Coming off of his big wins on Friday, Wictor Andersson (Karlskoga, Sweden) would fall to Olivier Simonet from Columbus State University 6-0, 6-2.

The duo would team up for doubles play against Egdar Bub and Rik Wolthuis from Mount Olive College. The Bobcats put up a valiant effort but eventually dropped that as well, 8-5.

Seniors Tyler Franks (Greensboro, Ga.) and Johan Wadstein (Helsingborg, Sweden) both had consolation singles matches Saturday. Franks would take the first set 6-4 against Tim Rupke of Francis Marion University but would lose 7-6 and 10-2 in the extended tiebreak third set.

Wadstein would bounce back from his tough draw Friday, beating Lucas Gobbi from USC-Aiken 6-1, 6-0. In the second round of consolation play, Wadstein would face off against Martin Harach from Young Harris College, falling to the Mountain Lion 6-2, 4-6, 10-5.

Wadstein and Franks were also in action in doubles play Saturday evening, matched up against Benedikt Wilde and Oussama Zoghlami from CSU. The top duo for the Bobcats was able to come away with the hard-fought 8-5 victory.

Cazort had a singles matchup in addition to his doubles play, facing off against Bruno Padiho from Flagler. He would take the first set 6-3, but drop the second set 6-0. Cazort would fall in a tiebreaker 10-6.

A number of Bobcats will be in action Sunday. Powell will continue ‘B’ Flight winners-bracket play tomorrow morning as he moves into the semifinals. Freshman Alex Nolley (Cumming, Ga.) will also be playing in a ‘B’ consolation match. Wadstein and Franks will also continue in ‘A’ Flight doubles play.
