How Sweep It Is – Bobcats Take All Titles at Home Tourney
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College & State University men's tennis team hosted the second and final day of the Windstream GCSU Men's Fall Championship, sweeping the titles in all flights.
In Flight "A" Singles, junior transfer Tobias Rausch (Mannheim, Germany) beat Lander's Christopher Mattsson 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the finals. Jerome Leborgne (Coordimanche, France) continued his dominating play winning the Flight "A" singles round after defeating Lander's Carlos Marquez 6-2, 6-3 and teammate Rausch in the final 6-4, 6-3.
Bobcat junior Bobby Angelucci (Acworth, Ga.) suffered a tough loss in the Flight "B" Singles against Lander's John Cappabianca in the semifinal. Sophomore Wictor Andersson (Karlskoga, Sweden) flew by Lander's Matthew Leffler 6-4, 6-1 and then won the final against Cappabianca in a match that went the distance 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Freshman Mario Cardenas (Kennesaw, Ga.) swept through the field with ease defeating Lander's Gary Bertoldo 6,2, 6-2 and then nearly blanking Lander's Will Ream in the final 6-0, 6-1.
In Flight "A" Doubles, freshman Ruslan Bekoev (Surgut, Russia) and junior Leo Bernardes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) blew through the field after a first round bye beating Carson-Newman's Chris Acker and Adriano Kira 8-5 and Lander's Leffler and Mattsson 8-4 to advance to the final. On the other side of the bracket Leborgne and Rausch beat Carson-Newman's Rodolfo Schwarz and Trent Slagle 8-6. The Bobcat pairs will square off this week to determine the champion.
In Flight "B", Bobcats Andersson and sophomore Tyler Franks (Greensboro, Ga.) defeated Lander's Cappabianca and Ream 8-2. They went on to defeat ABAC's Heitor Couri and Danilo Faria 8-1 and Bryant Anglin and Billy Griffin in the championship 8-2. After a first round bye Angelucci and Cardenas beat ABAC's Bryant Anglin and Billy Griffin 8-5 but then fell to Lander's Bertoldo and Ross Armstrong.
The Bobcats are back in action on Sept. 24 at the ITA Southeast Regionals.
