Bobcat Men’s Tennis Begins Fall Season This Weekend
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia College & State University tennis team and head coach Steve Barsby are pleased to announce the start of the 2010 fall tennis season with The Windstream GCSU Men’s Fall Championships. The Bobcats look to mix new and old players returning six from last years squad, adding two freshmen, and bringing in one transfer. Georgia College finished the season ranked No. 14 nationally, No. 3 in the region poll and finishing third in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC).
“Our goal this tournament is to win every flight,” said Barsby. “The guys coming back this year played at a higher level last year. We normally wouldn’t have freshmen and sophomores as our lead guys but a freshman and a sophomore were our number one and two.”
“Leo Bernardes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) played well last spring and can hopefully carry it over to the fall. Jerome Leborgne (Coordimanche, France) was about 10 points away from All-American so hopefully he can achieve that goal this year. Our team is young, fired up, looking good and very excited to start the fall season. This is the first season as head coach where I do not have a senior on the roster.”
The tournament is going to consist of five teams, Georgia College, Lander University, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC), Piedmont College and Carson-Newman College. Lander comes into the fall season with a strong program being ranked No. 12 in the nation and finishing fourth in the PBC last spring.
The first match is slated to start at the Centennial Center tennis facility at 11 a.m. on Fri. Sept. 17, continuing through the weekend.
