MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The men's tennis team at Georgia College & State University (5-0, 4-1 PBC) took down the No. 1 team in the country, Armstrong Atlantic State University (7-1, 4-1 PBC), today (Feb. 24) 5-4.
The Bobcats sealed the deal taking down the top team in the nation, when junior Max Beliankou (Minsk, Belarus) defeated No. 21 Tim Johannsen in a grueling match. Beliankou held off and won 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.
Georgia College got things started with the first match of the day, first doubles. The duo of Erick Siqueria (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Justin Pickham (Armidale, Australia), No. 2 in the nation, defeated Armstrong's Rafael Array and Johnnsen 8-3.
Beliankou and Givoane Nucci (Santa Catarina, Brazil) took things into a tiebreaker against Edualdo Bonet and Paul Fitzgerald. The Bobcat twosome won 9-8 (7-3).
In singles competition the matches were split 3-3. No. 1 Bonet was victorious over No. 8 Siqueria 6-4, 7-5 at the number one singles slot. At number two singles, Pickham took the match 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 over No. 11 Bishop.
Yoshimoto, No. 24 in the nation, defeated Irdoja in straight 6-4 sets. At fifth singles, No. 37 Array beat Benardez 6-1, 6-0, while Casagrande lost in straight 6-2 sets to Fitzgerald.
The Bobcats are on the road to face Erskine College Friday, Feb. 27 at 2:30 p.m.
