SKILLMAN, N.J. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its 2009 Region Award Winners with two Bobcats receiving top honors in the Southeast Region. Head Coach Steve Barsby was named Southeast Men's Coach of the Year and Erick Siqueira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was Men's Senior Player of the Year in the Southeast Region.
Barsby picks up the region honor after taking Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Men's Coach of the Year as well. He coached the Bobcat squad to a 17-3 mark, including a PBC Regular-Season title, the first in program history. The 17 victories rank third in program history, behind 19 in 1989 and 18 in 2005. The three losses are the fewest since the 1987 team lost just twice while going 12-2.
Siqueira, a two-time All-American, was dominant again compiling a 13-5 singles record. He was the No. 8 ranked player in the nation, taking No. 4 in the region.
Both Barsby and Siqueira will move on to the national ballot for both awards, with winners announced at the NCAA Finals in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Georgia College is fresh off winning the Southeast Regional after defeating PBC rival Columbus State University. The Bobcats advance to the NCAA Division II Finals facing Abilene Christian University Wednesday, May 13.
