INDIANAPOLIS - The first NCAA Division II Regional Rankings were released in men's tennis this week, and the Georgia College & State University men's squad (12-1, 6-0 PBC) were chosen first, the highest ranking in head coach Steve Barsby's nine seasons.
The rankings are used to choose the teams that make the NCAA Tournament in May. The Southeast Region-where the Bobcats lead-will send 12 teams to the tourney. The three conference championship tournament winners receive bids, leaving nine at-large selections chosen from this poll.
Georgia College has a 12-1 record, but a whopping 10-0 mark against region opponents. The Bobcats have won 10 matches in a row, including a 5-4 victory over then-No. 1 and defending National Champion Armstrong Atlantic State University Feb. 24.
The Bobcats are led by two-time All-American Erick Siqueira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) who has a 6-4 mark at first singles. He and Justin Pickham (Armidale, Australia) are one of the top doubles squads in the nation, posting a 9-1 mark. Senior Francis Yoshimoto (Sao Paulo, Brazil) owns an impressive 12-1 singles mark in the third slot, having won his last 10.
The Bobcats are back in action today, April 3 at 2 p.m. against #5 Hawaii Pacific University.
