MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Georgia College Men's Basketball (10-7, 4-4 PBC) damaged the University of Montevallo Falcons' hold on the top spot in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) West Saturday after a career-best 22 points from Isaac Thomas (Trion) and a second consecutive double-double from Kohl Roberts (Atlanta) combined for a 14-point victory, 65-51.
The Bobcats won the tip and took an easy early lead 10 seconds into the matchup. Thomas wowed the crowd with a dunk just two minutes later, and the score quickly became 8-4 in favor of the home team. The Falcons kept the game close, but after a Mark McCorkle (Cumming) three, the Bobcats were up by 10 with four-and-a-half minutes left in the half. At 25 seconds left on the clock, Thomas slammed in another monster dunk and made the lead 14. The Bobcats won the first half battle by 12, tying for their best halftime lead this season.
The Peach Belt's No. 1 defense certainly proved their top spot against the Falcons as the Bobcats held Montevallo to just 30 percent field goal shooting in the first half. Thomas helped with Georgia College's first half 55.2 percent average from the floor with his own perfect 7-for-7 field goal attempts. He led the team into the lockerroom with 14 points of his own.
Coming out of the break, Georgia College continued to control the game. The Falcons added points to their side of the scoreboard, but the Bobcats answered almost every Montevallo score immediately. Despite Montevallo's effort bringing the game within nine with eight minutes left, Georgia College pushed their lead into double digits moments later and didn't let go until the final buzzer.
The final 65-51 score was created mainly from the strong play from the Bobcat defense and the efforts of three Bobcats who each went north of 10 points.
Thomas led the Blue and Green with his career-best 22 points, six of which were courtesy of dunks. He missed only three from the field and two from the line. He also grabbed five boards and three assists.
Point guard Desmond Mitchell-LaFlam (New Smyrna Beach, Florida) was back to his usual double-digit tricks. He netted 14 points, going 2-of-3 past the arc. He led the team with seven assists as well. This game marks his fifth double-digit contest in the last six games.
Roberts had his second-consecutive and career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. He put up 22 points and 11 rebounds on the road last Wednesday against Columbus State University for his first double-dip in a Bobcat uniform.
Next up, the Bobcats hit the road for Young Harris College Wednesday, Jan. 25. After Georgia College's victory over Montevallo, Young Harris now tops the PBC West, one loss under the dethroned Falcons.
