GC Men’s Basketball Falls at Flagler, 79-78

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Georgia College men's basketball team (5-7, 1-4 PBC) lost by the slimmest of margins, 79-78 Wednesday night at Flagler College (8-4, 2-3 PBC).

Sophomore Ryan Blumenthal (Kennesaw, Ga.) led the Bobcats with 21 points in the loss, including a three-pointer at the buzzer that cut a four-point Flagler lead to just one. He was 4-for-8 from long range, and 8-for-14 overall.

Reigning Bobcat Athlete of the Week Royal Thomas (LaGrange, Ga.) scored 16 points with seven rebounds and four assists, while junior Larrentis Thomas (McDonough, Ga.) pulled in his fifth double-double of the year on 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

A tight contest throughout, the teams were never more than two possessions apart for the entire game, the highest advantage for both teams reaching six.

The Bobcats out-shot the Saints 48 percent (32-67) to 45 percent (25-56) from the floor, but the Saints were uncharacteristically impressive from long-range, hitting 11-of-21 (.524). The Saints came in 12th in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) in three-point shooting at just over 33 percent on the year.

Georgia College won the battle of the boards for the eighth time in 12 games this season, out-rebounding Flagler 39-31, including 15-10 on the offensive glass. The Saints won the game by hitting more threes (11-4) and getting more chances at the free-throw line (22-13).

Richard Brown led all scorers with 22 points, including five threes, 11 points over his season average. Flanking Brown was reserve Matt Conway with 17 points, Jerrell Oxendine added 14 and Adam Jones 10. The team's leading scorer, Keith Matthews, came into the game at 16.9 points per game, good for seventh in the PBC and was held to just four by a stingy Bobcat defense.

The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, Jan. 11 at 3:30 p.m., hosting Young Harris College at the Centennial Center. Saturday will serve as Habitat for Humanity Day, with raffles and other items to benefit awareness and fundraising for the great local cause.
